Setting them to 0 actually does not disable them. So if you do M-x
menu-bar-mode you have to do it twice to enable it.

I tried them for a while. They are okay, but I prefer to have that at
the end of the line as text that is consistent with my font rather
than some bitmap.

emacs: remove the extra vc parts from prot-modeline 
The diffstat was an interesting idea that I ultimately had no use for.
Showing the name of the project also is of marginal value, as that
information is avaible in various places, include Magit buffers, the
Beframe frame title, and more.

Also, the message has to be more vague because there may be other
errors instead of just not being able to pull (e.g. there is no
tracking information about the remote branch).
